Butterfly
biodiversity of western
ghats |
Western Ghats in south
India, and especially the
green plains and hills of
Kerala, is home to as many
as 300 species of
butterflies. Not
surprisingly, this region is
the paradise for butterfly
enthusiasts. A digital album
of the available butterflies
is being attempted to serve
as a repository of the
biodiversity.
Copying is permitted, with
due acknowledgement of the
source as www.utopianres.com.
All butterflies photographed
and edited by Dr.A.M.Ranjith.
Each filename indicates the common name and scientific name of the
butterfly.
You may also note that the
males and females of many
butterflies look entirely
different so that they are
confused as two different
species. The under and upper
surface is also strikingly
different in many types. The
dead leaf butterfly and the
great orange tip, have the
under surface just
resembling leaves while they
rest. The unsuspecting
nature lover would just get
confused when he goes near a
group of these resting
butterflies. They all fly
off and there is a riot of
colour flying. Great are the
ways of nature.
The
sizes of butterflies
are arranged to fit the
window. It is not related to
natural size.
Dr. George
Mathew, the expert in butterfly
parks from the Kerala Forest
Research Institute, is the
honorary consultant for the
butterfly gallery. The site
shows the butterfly biodiversity
of the western ghats, collected
from around peechi reserve
forest.
